The Meaning of Life by Jason G. Lutz

The Meaning of Life by Jason G. Lutz

On Sunday afternoon, Jaxson asked me “what is the meaning of life?”. I am certain he was not curious of the answer, instead he most likely heard this question on Disney XD. All the same, it is important to establish foundationally realities when the opportunity arises. What is interesting is how easy the answer came and how simple it really is: “the meaning of life is to serve the Lord”.

In Genesis, Adam is almost immediately given responsibility: “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it” (2:16)

In Deuteronomy, the Lord gives specific directive: “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.
Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (6:6-7)

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon searched all things and came to the same conclusion: “Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.” (12:13)

In Romans, St. Paul holds back no strong words to make this point clear: “But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life” (6:22)

And our Savior tells us the greatest Commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37)

In this we need to be clear about a few things, we serve because He is worthy of our service. We can serve only because it is His Spirit who intercedes on our behalf. We desire to serve only because it is His desire to redeem and mold us in His perfection. It is He who originates, it is He who calls.
