Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that each of you has a wonderful week and a beautiful Thanksgiving Day. I would like to use today’s devotion to be mindful of a few things we, as Followers of Christ, can be thankful for. Here goes:

1. The Bible. The simple reality that God has chosen to reveal Himself through the written word is in and of itself remarkable. It is also remarkable that the Bible exists, especially the New Testament. The New Testament is a collection of letters that rose up through the early church to form the narrative of our Savior. It took a grand work of the Spirit for this to occur. After the Bible was canonized a battle raged over translating it into modern language. Many people fought for and gave much to see that we have a Bible in English. This is a powerful testament of our Father’s desire to speak with us.
2. The Church. Hillarie Belloc once remarked that the Church is a thing perpetually defeated but never vanquished. They thought rationalism would destroy her, it has not. They thought evolution would destroy her, it has not. They though communism would destroy her, it has not. As we know so well, people have long thought she would destroy herself. She has not! Despite all of our flaws as the Bride of Christ, we remain. And this is exactly why we do: He has a vested and profound interest in our well-being.
3. Salvation. As we kick off the Holiday Season, I am sure that many people will feel like they do not belong anywhere. I imagine that most of us feel this way on occasion. It can be painful. Let us take a moment to remember this: The Creator of the Universe rose up from His throne to take the form of a man. He then proceeded to walk amongst us teaching and healing. He suffered at our hands, as we could not bear Him. He then rose up from the Grave, giving those who persecuted Him Victory over death. Finally He ascended into Heaven to prepare a place for us.
My current computer wallpaper is a picture of the Black Forest in Germany. I have never been there, but my ancestors walked those hills; therefore, I long to walk them. Similarly, we truly only know glimpses of and a longing for Heaven. Yet He is clear, without any doubt, we belong with Him.
