Consider all your Works by Jason G. Lutz

Consider all your Works by Jason G. Lutz

I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. (Psalm 77:12)

If a person happens to be interested in health and wellness and pursues readings regarding the subject, her or she will eventually come across writings about the value of meditation. As with most things in popular health and wellness, the body of literature is ambiguous and more often than not ends with the suggestion that an interested person purchase something. I will make no further statement on this, because what we need to do is examine what the Bible says about meditation. The word meditate appears with frequency in the Bible and the purpose is clear and delightful.

I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways (Psalms 119:15). At different points in the Psalms and from different Psalmists the term meditate on is related regarding God’s precepts, His works, or His word. We are absolutely encouraged to understand this as meditating on/thinking about His Glory, the scope of the whole. As a note, I believe taking time to think about His laws, yes even Leviticus, and the way He has worked with His people through History is a very refreshing thing. He is the ultimate good and His laws and ways shout this reality.

While He may not have used the term meditate, Christ Himself tells His followers to “… consider the birds of the air… and the lilies of the field” (Matthew 6). Consider these as the Father feeds them and clothes them, He is the great Provider. Think about these because each demonstrates the power of order and purpose , He is our King and our Patron. Consider these because each demonstrates the beauty in His creation, art knows nothing before the Artist.

The intent being that when we are troubled, stressed, angry, hurt, ashamed, worried, in a wonderful mood, or have simply woken up for the day it is the best thing for us to consider/meditate actively on His Glory. Weather this be the beauty of His creation, the Promises He has kept to His people, or the transcendent wonder and goodness which is revealed to us in Christ. May we always remember this: His Glory is the only satisfaction for our being. This is why He not only freely gives it, He broadcasts it in Power. At some point we will know that it is not about descriptions, it is about the infinite extent to which He loves us and wants to have us redeemed and at home with Him.
